Home AI cooling checklist

Cool a passive GPU.
Without guessing.

Board label. Airflow. Fan power. Cable path. First load.

P40-class remains measure first. V100 PG500-216 R3 is research only. This guide does not change either status.

Before mounting

Three checks first.

Board

Match the label

Use the exact board number and the measurements already sent to Quarkpad. A GPU family name is not enough.

Room

Keep service space

The live shrouds add about 54mm plus your fan. With a 25mm fan, plan 94mm including working room.

Cable

Show the bend

The power connector, fan lead, side panel, and nearby card must stay clear before the shroud is secured.

Fan power

Read the header manual.

All seven reference fans are 12V PWM models. Current is not the same. Add every fan on the controller and stay within its documented rating.

Do not guess.

Never force a connector, splice a live cable, or use a GPU-board fan header without its exact electrical documentation. The S12038-8K lists 2.20A and a 3.20A maximum. Check the exact source, connector, cable, fuse, shared loads, and startup demand. Every fan is buyer supplied.

Install

Six plain steps.

1

Shut down

Power off, unplug, and let the GPU cool. Work on a stable, nonconductive surface.

2

Dry fit

Place the shroud without force. Stop for scraping, rocking, a gap, or a blocked connector.

3

Choose direction

P40 and V100 PCIe heatsinks accept either direction. Match the fan arrows to the chassis airflow.

4

Check power

Confirm 12V, connector shape, total current, startup demand, and the header or controller limit.

5

Secure it

Tighten evenly. Do not crush the cooler shell. Route every lead away from blades and hot parts.

6

Spin check

With power still off, turn the blade gently. It must move without wire, screw, or shroud contact.

Airflow basis: NVIDIA documents bidirectional airflow for the Tesla P40 and Tesla V100 PCIe. The rest of the chassis still needs one deliberate intake-to-exhaust path. Read the proof record.

Before load

Eight checks. One stop.

Local. Nothing saved. Owner check only.

Not proof or approval.
First power-on

Watch it before load.

Start the system with the case open only if the chassis instructions permit it. Confirm the fan spins, the cable stays clear, and the airflow goes through the heatsink.

Read-only NVIDIA monitornvidia-smi --loop=1

Verify fan operation before starting work. Record response. Begin short and watch temperature, power, and thermal-event output.

Stop immediately for:

fan stoppage, blade contact, cable movement, burning smell, electrical noise, thermal slowdown, shutdown, or a temperature that keeps climbing without settling. Do not leave the first load unattended.

Something off?

Stop. Send a photo.
